I was one of the people chosen to help test and start Substack's new "Notes" feature. I've been using it for a few days, and have enjoyed the experience.

I ended up finding some new Substacks that I enjoy, and talking with some cool people.

When you try it, I think the most important thing you'll want to know is that right at the top you'll see two tabs or buttons. One marked "Home" the other "Subscribed."

If you hit the "Subscribed" button you'll see "Notes" from Emeth, and from any other Substacks you hold a subscription to. You won't see anything from anyone that you don't have that direct relationship with.

If you want to broaden things out a bit, you can do so by hitting the "Home" button. This will show you "Notes" not only from Emeth, and any other Substacks you hold a subscription to, but also from those Substacks that are recommended by Emeth, or other publications you are subscribed to. Either way, you won't just see random stuff, it will all be from within a fairly tight network.

I'm kinda lost with all these different ways to interact. As it is I rarely check in the chat area. Not really seeing the benefit beyond what we already have working, personally.

Yeah, it does seem to be expanding out like a hydra, and I'm not sure how it will all shake out. I think that the idea is:

The newsletter remains the thing, no matter if folks read it on the web or in email, it is the meat of everything.

I've been using Chat to mainly share cool things I find, or to reach out about things that I'd like people to know, but aren't really suitable for the newsletter. Like my trip to Bremerton tomorrow evening.

I think that Chat could be very valuable to us in the effort to share best Lodge practices, if other people post to it as well. I don't think it has much value if I am the only person driving it, because I think that other folks have important perspectives and knowledge that I don't possess.

It's a good tool for us to learn from each other.

Notes is I think envisioned as a place of retreat from social media fatigue. Where we can sneak away from Facebook, Twitter, or wherever, and only see things from folks we are somehow connected with.

One tremendous benefit of Notes, I think, is that everyone with an Emeth Subscription of any kind, can post there, and that post can be seen by everyone else who is somehow subscribed. Given the way Facebook throttles Lodge upcoming event posts and the like, I think that by posting those things on Notes (continuing to post them on Facebook is good too) they will actually be seen by a lot more Masons than they would be on Facebook. There is no algorithm driving Notes so posts can be seen.
