The Future Of Emeth
It seems I'm geriatric now
I’ve been joking about being an ‘Old Fart’ for a long time now. I don’t actually feel old, but I’m certainly getting up there in age. That’s OK, I remember dumb things I did when I was young, and have certainly grown a lot smarter as the years have piled on, so I think it is probably good to be an old guy, at least for me.
But, yesterday, while reading an essay from a writer I really enjoy, Katherine Dee, I ran across the following:
“Now Gen X and geriatric millennials are shitting their pants because the medium shifted from blogs to video.”
So, damnit, it seems that I’m geriatric now!
Alas, I’m not at the point of needing diapers yet, but I did grow up before the advent of personal computers and the online world they allowed to form, so yeah, I’m an old guy, and maybe by only writing I’m missing the boat.
And of course way back in 1875, our great Brother, Albert Mackey was lamenting the fact that most Masons did pretty much zero reading about Freemasonry. So maybe I’ve missed a boat that sailed away 150 years ago.
Each and every day, you give me your attention by reading the words I write. There are a lot of you, and I sincerely thank you for that. It means more to me than you can ever know. Some of you even support this work financially with paid subscriptions. You truly deserve more thanks than I can ever give, for none of this would be possible without you.
But, I must wonder, is text enough? Are written words on a screen what you are truly after? Or is Ms. Dee right? Am I an old fart living in a world that no longer exists?
All of this is a long way of introducing a poll.
A way to find out in what form you would prefer to consume the words I write.
I ask that you take a moment to answer it, so that Emeth can become the Masonic resource that you really need.
There are three options:
The written word, just as it has always been here on Emeth.
Posts, the same as always, but with an attached audio recording. So that you can hear my goofy voice reading what I’ve written.
Posts, the same as always, but with an attached video. So that you can hear my goofy voice, and see my ugly mug while I read what I’ve written.
Please choose what you would prefer:
Now, this second bit is important.
Adding a voiceover to my posts here would be more work for me. I’ve got to make the dog quit barking, make the wife stop yelling at her computer, turn off all the noisy stuff, on and on.
Adding video to my posts would be a lot more work for me. I’d have to do all the things mentioned above, plus bathe once in awhile, turn on a bunch of lights, remember to not pick my nose, on and on.
That leads to a second, important question, arising because Emeth needs to at least partially pay for itself.
Thank you for answering these two questions for me. I truly do appreciate it, and your answers will help guide the future of Emeth.
If you came here today looking for a thought provoking post and got nothing but this poll, sorry about that!
But, maybe I can make it up to you!
Yesterday I wrote what I think its a pretty darn good essay about fixing our ‘Vote By Mail’ system by removing the U.S. Mails from it. You can read that here:
If that isn’t your cup of tea. (Yeah, I will admit to thinking far too much about things like elections.) I also wrote about my own journey through the world of Tarot that has spanned quite a few decades now. It’s related to, but quite different from my journey through Freemasonry. You can read that here:

Honestly, I read much faster than most people speak, and in fact faster than I can hear. I reserve video time for things that I can't learn without seeing it done, and for strictly entertainment. I don't like most vlogs because people waste my time yammering about inanities to up their clock numbers.
Do what you do best. Leave audios, videos and podcasting to the brothers who have refined those skill sets. And bring your voice and shotgun to the next Turkey Shoot! 🤠
