My middle daughter got a NY Masonic Grand Lodge Scholarship that she used to earn a 1 year Opera Certificate from the Royal College of Music in London England. Then RCM advised her to Audition for Opera Roles in Germany. Kathryn has been singing Opera Roles in Germany for about 20 years now. Masonry helped, and we salute you.

That is awesome to know! I found some details about the Grand Lodge of New York's scholarship program here:

Thanks for your reply. My daughter drove from Boston to an Award Ceremony in Albany NY. The Mason who set up the Ceremony later became the NY Grand Master.

Done well I think these award ceremonies can be really effective outreach to the broader community. One of the Districts within my Jurisdiction does a really fine job with theirs, and the attendance of students, parents, and teachers is remarkably huge.

I will pass this on to my brother for my nephew! Thank you!

In my first year of Freemasonry I volunteered to replace the Secretary AND Treasurer who after 3 years of seeking replacement said they would Demit. Because these Brothers were not interested and wanted out… the Lodge finances were in a horrible state.

This was in 1995… one thing i started was NOT giving money to Canada Post… I was shown Bcc (Blind carbon copy) and how to send out ALL Lodge missives by e-mail… the Grand Lodge hit the roof! We were about to the GL communication so I went (first year MM and Lodge Secretary/Treasurer with permission to address the Communication…. Here was my point: There were 135 Lodges in the GL and the average size was the same as my Lodge… we were spending (in 1995) about $2,000.00 a year in postage… that multiplied by 135 Lodges worked out to over $250,000.00 per year!… Our Higher Education Bursary Fund gave out about $150.000.00 in bursaries a year which the GL had to struggle with… cutting out the useless “snail mail” would alone more than cover that expense… my proposal and practice was accepted and as they say, “The rest is history!”.

That is really spectacular! Sometimes, I think we tend to forget how quickly a large number of small expenses add up to real money. Congratulations on your work to save your Jurisdiction so much!

I still lament that it is for students who go to school in WA only.

Perhaps that will change in the future. At the most recent meeting of the foundation we discussed why that limitation was put into place so long ago, and it seems that the reasons for it might well no longer be with us.
