While for most of the world the winter solstice is just an astronomical event this event celebrates and recount the path of the human being reaching the mastery of the self.
To achieve this we must first die to the psychological aggregates of the ego and cross the desert of darkness to confront death itself.
This is represented in the winter solstice; the solstices are called a gate, because it is the time when men have access to the spiritual realm and viceversa.
The Masonic Ritual symbolizes this when the candidate is in the Chamber of Reflection. For it is here fface the required tests to chip away our imperfections. For that the tools to endure the tests will be handle to us.
Something interesting happens after the winter solstice that does not happen in the summer solstice. The sun stops its movement and for three days sets and rises in the same spot. This was interpreted by the Ancients as the death of the sun.
This astronomical event represent the VITRIOL of the candidate, the labyrinth where the minotaur has to be confronted. The candidate looks death because the battle is in the interior. Is in the heart where the monsters are fought and killed. Killing the beast is not enough, now we have to found our way back and not get blinded by the euphoria of killing the monster. Traveling back out is necessary otherwise the person risks becoming the monster.
This period of three days are represenred by the three degrees of the Masonic Ritual. The person looks death because is working in his defects and battling his inner beast to be able to rise a new person a Master.
After the three days the sun start to move again, symbolizing the rising from the death. Light has defeated darkness. Life has defeated death.
It is here where the person is risen from the dark. Where a new man has came out of the labyrinth. Where man has become a Master. But the road is not over. Now more than ever he has to be most cautious, lest the traitors find him.
