Saying Goodbye To Summer
With Our Great BBQ and Starlight Degree!
Here you go, the final announcement for our Annual Emeth BBQ Contest and Starlight Fellowcraft Degree!
It’s going to be truly great, and I hope that you can join us!
I’m making this final announcement today, because yesterday I ordered the trophies for our contest! As in past years we will have trophies for:
-Grand Champion
-Grand Master’s Choice
-Best Single Meat
-Wildcard
Also as in past years, I promise these trophies are gaudy as all get out! Go big, or go home as they say.
So, bring your BBQ, throw some meat on it, bring a side or two, and we’ll all vote to see who truly is the best of the best!
Of course the winners will boast, and the rest will cry! Let the battle be joined!
If you don’t want to cook, that is A-OK too. We need eaters, and we need voters.
And yeah, we don’t have no stinkin’ rules. Cook what you like, how you like, if everyone agrees that yours is best, you’ll win!
Make enough for everyone, this ain’t some sort of wimpy ‘turn in a tiny box to some judge’ kinda thing. Everyone is a judge!
After we eat we’ll enjoy each other’s company till dark.
Then we’ll make our way into the wonderful outdoor Lodge room, under the trees.
There we’ll put on a truly superb Fellowcraft Degree. In costume, under the stars, lit only with lanterns.
This is a truly superb Masonic experience that you’re not going to want to miss!
Here are the details:
Saturday, September 20
Quilcene-Jefferson Lodge
170 Herbert Street, Quilcene, Washington
There’s tons of parking, massive lawns, a great Masonic Temple, and of course the excellent outdoor Lodge room under towering trees.
Beyond the BBQ Contest (as if that isn’t enough) and beyond the Starlight Degree (as if that isn’t enough as well) the Quilcene Fair and Parade is also taking place on September 20. So there will be a Parade, if that’s your thing. A car show. An Arts and Crafts Fair, and food vendors if you just can’t wait for that luscious BBQ!
On the 20th, you can roll into the Lodge and set up at whatever time you desire. Last year I got there mighty early in the morning only to find that the Brothers (and family and friends) from our Lodge in Marysville had beaten me there by a long time, already had their cooking site all set up, and their fires going. Maybe that’s why they took the huge trophy home!
Feel free as well, if it is easier, to drop your cooking stuff off the evening before.
Plan on a really casual lunch about mid-day, and of course all the great BBQ will be served at supper time.
This is certainly a family and friends kind of thing. So bring your partner, bring your kids, and bring your friends. While only Masons can attend our Degree, Mrs. Bailey will certainly have wine and conversation inside the Masonic Temple while we are doing our thing in the outdoor Lodge room.
I should probably mention as well that some alpacas are scheduled to be on the property for any kids who attend to pet.
Probably fire fighters too. Not for petting (get your mind out of the gutter, damnit) last year the local fire department stopped by to share dinner with us. I imagine we’ll see them again this year, as we fill the tiny town of Quilcene with clouds of smoke!
If you’ve never been to Quilcene it is a very small town on the Olympic Peninsula, just to the south of Port Townsend. Completely surrounded by natural beauty. It’s the perfect setting for both our BBQ, and our Degree.
If you would like to stay on the night of the 20th, and are rugged, there is plenty of flat lawn around the Lodge to set up tents large or small. Boondocking in an RV is A-OK as well.
Me, well, I kinda like a hotel, so I’ll be over at the Mount Walker Inn. It is just a handful of blocks from the Lodge, so super convenient, and quite comfortable. As of this writing, there are still rooms available if you would like to stay either the night of the 19th or 20th.
You can book a room there at:
As I recall, the Mount Walker Inn is the only hotel type place in Quilcene, but there are loads of other nearby options. I compiled a list of them here:
Are you planning on joining us for this wonderful Masonic event? Please let me know in the comments below.
Are you planning on entering our amazing BBQ contest? Please let me know in the comments below.
Are you interested in a role in the Starlight Degree? Please let me know in the comments below.
I really, really hope to see you there! Each year it just keeps getting better and better.
There is no cost for this event, but we will have two donation cans out for your consideration. One can to help defray the costs of the event, and a second can for our very kind hosts, Quilcene-Jefferson Lodge.
Let’s cook, and eat some really great food, then let’s Pass an extremely worthy Brother or two!
One final request, before I go…
Will you help spread the word by sharing this post, and sharing the information with your Lodge Brothers? The more who attend, the more fun it will be for all! Please do let our Brothers know.

If there are any chairs still needing to be filled, let me know, I can try and recruit over here. EDIT Right now I have two brothers (plus another possible) coming that would be able to fill seats, let me know what's needed. EDIT #2 - One of the brothers, Will Lewis, can do the G lecture and charge, if needed.
Have a great BBQ and inspiring degree. Hopefully next year I will try to join you.
