Recently I finished reading More Light, Collected Masonic Writings 2017-2021 by Brother Austin R. Shifrin.
The first, perhaps two-thirds of the book consists of short essays exploring Bro. Shifrin’s thoughts on various Masonic topics and teachings. The second portion of the book contains a brief history of Freemasonry, and Appendant bodies, with a special focus on that history in Pennsylvania.
Although originally written for a Scottish Rite publication, most of the essays are not specific to the Scottish Rite, and would be of interest to all Masons. I personally found the essays, and the stories within them to be light, quick, and easy reading, but always communicating an important Masonic lesson, from the author’s unique perspective.
It is obvious from his writing that Br. Shifrin thinks deeply about Freemasonry, and is eager to share his discoveries.
An example of his writing style that I found quite interesting, was his encouragement that Brothers not neglect the Blue Lodge for activities in Appendant or Concordant bodies:
“…if the desire to explore the many appendant bodies may be analogous to the curiosity or sense of adventure that inspires us to travel to new and different lands, we should make sure not to take for granted the treasures in our own backyard. It is possible to be worldly, but not be versed in the heritage of your native land. I know there are people who have dedicated more of their time, in a focused manner, to an ongoing study of blue lodge - traveling more in their native country instead of farther afield - and the depth of their knowledge speaks well of them.”
Certainly this is an important message for us all, but Bro. Shifrin delivers it in a gentle and encouraging way.
A small percentage of the essays do touch upon Scottish Rite Degree work and symbolism. As a member of the Southern Jurisdiction Scottish Rite, I found the author’s brief forays into the different work performed in his Northern Jurisdiction to be of great interest. Prior to reading More Light, I was aware that the Northern Jurisdiction’s Degrees and governance structure were different than that which I’ve experienced, but by reading this book, I learned new details about those differences.
The author also delves into the response to the pandemic, specifically the adoption of video conference platforms, and gives his thoughts as to how these technologies may well stay a part of Freemasonry, and indeed could change our Ancient Craft. I believe that anyone who has struggled to keep Freemasonry active and alive while we were unable to meet together, will appreciate reading his thoughts.
RW Paul J. Roup of the Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania wrote recommending More Light:
“The articles compiled in More Light are at once heady and intellectual but at the same time conversational and familiar. He is equal parts storyteller and teacher. The paths he takes the reader on as well as the conclusions he draws will be both entertaining and thought-provoking to any student of the craft.”
Jason F. Craig of the Pennsylvania West Grand Council Allied Masonic Degrees wrote:
“This book will be a valuable addition to any masonic library. I know it will be in mine.”
I am pleased to add my voice to these in recommending More Light, Collected Masonic Writings. I believe that Masons who read it will enjoy it, and learn from it. That is an admirable goal for any Masonic author, and Bro. Shifrin has met that goal.

The written word is the way that knowledge is passed through humanity. From generation to generation, century to century, era to era.
As Freemasons are dedicated to bringing and preserving Light within our world, and as knowledge is Light, we must be concerned about attacks on books and authors.
The Magpie Mason writes today about the Grand Orient of France’s statement concerning the murderous assault on author Salman Rushdie. His post is well worth reading, and can be found at:
