Let's Chat About Our Degrees
What was your favorite?
What was your favorite Masonic Degree to go through?
Why? What did you love about it?
Is that different from your favorite Degree to help confer?
Secondly…
What Degree was most impactful on your life?
Is it the same as your favorite?
I think that I most often have Masons tell me that the Fellowcraft Degree is their favorite. That’s always surprising to me, because of our three Craft Degrees, I enjoyed it the least.
Now in saying that, I also have to say that the Fellowcraft Degree Lecture I received was quite superb and wonderful. But not because of the Lecture itself, but because of the amazing skill of the Brother who delivered it. A skill I’ve not seen matched since.
I also have to say that my Lodge confers an absolutely top notch Fellowcraft Degree. We work hard on it, and we do it exceptionally well. Better than we do the other two.
So, I’m not an anti-FC guy by any means. But, when I went through our Craft Degrees it was my least favorite, and undoubtedly the least impactful on me.
My favorite Craft Degree was the Master Mason Degree. I was surprised by parts of it, and I enjoyed it a lot. I like seeing it conferred as well.
But, I don’t think it had too much impact on me.
For me, it was and is the Entered Apprentice Degree.
I wouldn’t say that I particularly enjoyed the EA Degree, nor does the experience really stand out in my memory, but that Degree had a massive and continuing impact on my life. I wasn’t the same man after it as I was before it.
I don’t know why that Degree impacted me so strongly as it did, but that it did is undeniable.
So, that has to be the one for me.
Beyond the Craft Lodge, the Scottish Rite Degrees also had a pretty solid impact on me. I don’t think however that this impact was the result of any particular Degree. Rather the Degrees in series, as a whole.
And not forgetting the York Rite, undoubtedly the Templar Degrees (I know, they aren’t called Degrees, but I’m trying to write for clarity here) were extremely interesting and cool. I’ve never been active as a Knight Templar, but the conferrals were standout.
What about you?

The EA degree had the biggest impact on me for a couple of reasons, first and foremost was although I was older and established as a successful business owner, I wasn't perfect and second, I had the opportunity to be with men who are now my lifelong friends a Brother's.
Favorite degree to confer is the MM because I have to really put a lot of work before I sit in the East no matter how many times I have done it, but I like doing lectures in all three and my favorite chair is SD.
MWPGM BAILEY,
When I received the EA Degree 40 years ago, the first thing my eyes saw was the handlebar moustache of that Worshipful Master. Then I got to sit on a sideline, and see the full EA Degree conferred in another Candidate.
My 2nd favorite was my MM Degree in Webster Masonic Lodge No. 538 near Rochester NY. My dad had been given Authorization to enter Webster Masonic Lodge No. 538 by the WV Masonic Grand Lodge GM.
So MWPGM G. Glenwood Brown (1968 WV GM) "Raised" me. I was 4th Generation Mason in the Brown family line. ENOUGH!
