Our Brother Albert Pike, in his The Book Of The Words defined Emeth, as used in ‘high degree’ Freemasonry. He wrote that it means:
“Truth, Justice, Right, Fairness, Sincerity, Fidelity, Integrity, Firmness, Stability; A true man.”
I believe that as Freemasons we are all on a quest for self improvement, and I believe that these are all attributes that we should seek to empower within our lives. I hope that a subscription to Emeth will lead to self reflection for its readers, and thus, help to fulfill the promise of Freemasonry which is to help a good man become an even better man.
He also defined the word as meaning:
“Perpetuity, Permanence.”
These words are certainly accurate descriptors of our Ancient Fraternity. As we all know though, interest in our Lodges ebbs and flows over time. I hope that a subscription to Emeth will also provide readers with powerful methods for creating a great Lodge experience, and as a result can serve to assist a Lodge in the goals of thriving and growing.
It is my goal to publish Emeth each Sunday morning. As our traditional day of relaxation, I hope that you can pair it with your morning coffee, enjoying it at a quiet time each and every week.
You will have no doubt noticed that Emeth is not a free newsletter, and that is perhaps rare in the Masonic world. It is my hope with Emeth that it is a high enough quality publication to justify its cost. While I have published many things without cost throughout my Masonic career, on blogs, in magazines both online and print, and on social media, it would not be possible for me to publish as often as I intend upon publishing Emeth if it was without cost. I hope that by keeping the monthly cost lower than a can of by beloved Copenhagen tobacco, I’ve hit a spot that folks can be comfortable with.
That said, occasional Emeth posts will be made available without cost, as I continue to believe that sharing my writings freely is an important service to our Ancient Craft.
For many years, I had thought about someday creating a high quality hard cover book of Masonic Essays. As Substack grew in popularity however, it seemed that this modern form of publishing is a way of publishing that will allow my words to reach a great many more people.
If you enjoy what you read in Emeth, I hope that you will consider a paid subscription, and I hope that you will tell your Brothers about it. I also hope that you will participate in any discussions that take place among subscribers. Together, we can build a new form of Masonic fellowship here on Substack.
Look for the Grand Opening of Emeth, otherwise known as the very first post of this new newsletter on Sunday, March 7, 2021. I sincerely hope that you enjoy it.
I would like to know if it Emeth is pronounced with the first letter a soft "e" as in "them" or a long "e" as in "electric". or a "sh" as in "ship". Crossing the Jordan can be risky business.
