Some thoughts about Freemasonry here on Substack
Yesterday’s essay here on Emeth wasn’t written by me, but I enjoyed reading it, and was proud to publish it here.
And that got me thinking about our little Masonic ecosystem here on Substack.
It seems to me that this is a great platform for Masons to embrace. The old blogging platforms are pretty much dead in 2026. Here, we can publish long form essays like we could there. In the Chat feature we can post items of Masonic interest, and communicate one on one with each other. Notes functions much like Social Media, quite like Twitter/X. And for those who aren’t into writing, but still have something to say, the podcasting tools here are easy to use.
So, I’d certainly like to see Freemasonic content here on Substack continue to grow. I’d like to see more voices join our conversations on this platform.
Through the years, a lot of Masons have come here, set up a publication, written a number of essays, and then stopped. I point that out not to offer any sort of judgement, or to express a belief that they should have persisted, for certainly most people aren’t interested and don’t have the available time to run a publication here long term. That’s just a fact.
Some do. Some have remained for a longer term.
It seems to me that there are two ways I can help. That I can use Emeth to help.
The first, and most obvious, is when a Mason wants to start a publication here to get his thoughts about our Craft out into the world. I can do what I can to help promote those new publications. And indeed I have. I can’t of course see everything happening on the platform, but I do keep my eye out for people writing about Freemasonry, and when I’ve run across these new Masonic publications I’ve done what I can to promote them. Shared the posts in Emeth’s Chat, Restacked them in Notes, and added them to my Recommendations on the home page and in the subscription process. It is my sincere hope that these actions help with discoverability, for that is the great challenge of the online world.
The second, and I suppose much less obvious, is if a Mason doesn’t want to go to the work of creating and maintaining a publication here. If he just wants to get his thoughts about our Craft out into the world.
When that is the case, I am always pleased to consider posting the work here. Sending it out as a part of Emeth, under the author's own name. Just as I did with yesterday’s post.
Those are the two things that I can do if you want to publish something or lots of things here on Substack.
If you create a publication focused on Freemasonry, let me know. I’ll do what I can to promote it, and hopefully send some Masons your way so that they can read your words.
If you write an essay on a Masonic topic, but don’t plan on making it a frequent thing, and don’t want to have to create and maintain a publication of your own, please feel free to send it my way. I can’t promise that I’ll publish everything that is sent to me, but I will certainly consider it if that is your desire.
In these ways we can grow the amount of Masonic content here on Substack, which in my view is wholly positive for our Craft.
I don’t want to leave you without something Masonic today, so below are links into two guest posts both of which I published years ago, so they probably haven’t been seen by most people here. Both are exceptional, so I am proud to point you towards them today.
Third Degree Origins
Today I am honored and proud to publish the first paper in Emeth’s essay contest. I read it with a great deal of interest, and I think that you will find it to be as fascinating as I did.

For those new to Emeth, welcome, it is great to have you with us. For those new to Emeth, I write about Freemasonry regularly, with a focus on improving the Masonic experience for Masons everywhere. To do so, I draw upon my own experiences as a Worshipful Master, District Deputy to the Grand Master, and as Grand Master. Emeth also hosts daily discuss…

I appreciate what you are doing for the Craft and the authors of various forms of Masonic, Masonic adjacent, and socially beneficial content. It is incredibly difficult to increase visibility for new channels and content without those who help to share or promote it.
The simplest and easiest way for a channel to garner new readers and visibility is for those who peruse their content to like, re-stack, and share it. Subscribers help too, though I know a lot of people guard their inboxes zealously, given the amount of spam that inundates a lot of us these days. Ultimately the only thing the platforms and budding AI overlords understand is engagement. If we do not engage it is assumed their is no value to be found, and bury it under everything else.
If we want to grow and support useful or valuable content that promotes our interest we just need to consider a couple of click of the mouse. If we have the ability, comments help too. They help the writer to tailor and improve their content, and shows real and meaningful engagement for the metrics used to increase visibility.
Great topic as always MWB Bailey!
It's funny you posted this today. The article I asked you to read over yesterday was almost suggested as a guest post for you since Emeth is strictly Masonic and my Ouachita Optic is a bit more wide ranging. I have greatly appreciated your restacks and comments the last couple of months. They make a huge difference!
