Continuing Our Retreat Discussion
A long Masonic weekend
Last week I raised the idea of Emeth hosting a Masonic retreat, and we had a very good discussion about that, with a lot of Brothers sharing their thoughts.
With this post, I’ll try and compile what I understand from all that was shared, and I hope that everyone will continue the discussion so that assuming we do host a retreat, it is as good as we can make it, fun and fulfilling for everyone.
I also think that this is a valuable continuing discussion, because I think that Lodges need to hold regular Lodge retreats. They are superb ways to forge the bonds of Brotherhood, so I hope that they will be embraced on a much broader scale.
Here’s what I think you have told me.
A private, secluded location, rural or mountainous. From this, I assume this means a rental home, as opposed to a hotel or resort.
A reasonable cost.
A limited number of Master Masons.
Centrally located.
No set schedule.
This leads to a number of questions.
The costs involved would be the rental of the house, and groceries for the group. Keeping those costs in mind what do you think is a reasonable price to pay for a three day weekend retreat?
Should a Mason be able to bring a prospective Mason along with him?
How far would you be willing to travel for a three day weekend retreat?
And of course I’m certain that there are a lot of other questions that I’m just not thinking of.
So I hope that we can discuss the above questions, and everything I’ve forgotten to ask here today.
Please tell me, what do you think?
Let’s chat about it…
I did a bit of writing beyond Emeth yesterday. I wrote about our U.S. Election, on Election Eve. If you’d like to read those thoughts, you can find them here: Election Day In America.
I also had a bit of fun with Tarot. If you’d like to check that out, you can find it here: Dear Bolo Tie Guy No. 3.

My G L in Canada had a weekend get-a-way in a mountain resort for over 40 years. It took place in a hotel and would be great training for hotel staff hired for the summer season... 600+ would show up. Arriving Friday afternoon registration would include dinner Friday evening with a great speaker in a large banquet room... breakfast, lunch and dinner with many breakaway meetings on a myriad of subjects pertaining to the craft... dinner would be back in the large banquet room with a closing of the subject of the main speaker (included guys like Chris Hodapp who wrote Freemasons for Dummies... the largest selling Dummies book in its now 4th edition)... no regalia, no titles and lots of super Masonic enjoyment.
It kept slowing down and I believe it was that too many "had" to bring their spouses and the true fellowship was gradually watered down to a dribble... one weekend a year without "the little woman" was too much I guess for too many!
They have started another called Weekend Without Titles in a smaller central city in the province but living in Mexico, I have not attended.
I have a term for the phenomena of "the little woman" coming but I'll leave that unsaid and I have no idea how many show up.
Cost for 3 days $150
Only Masons
Travel 3 hours.
